Celebrations are the perfect time to pop open a great bottle of bubbly with family and friends.  My personal favorite is the Perrier-Jouet Brut Rosé Fleur de Champagne Belle Epoque. This rich rosé champagne has strawberry, candied cherry and citrus notes that are linked to a vibrant structure which is nicely balanced with a lingering finish. Perrier-Jouet is a large producer based in Epernay that is most famous for its striking “flower bottle” which remains one of Champagne’s most recognizable designs. The Perrier-Jouet Brut Rosé Fleur de Champagne Belle Epoque is pricey ($298.99). However you can experience Perrier-Jouet Champagne for far less money by trying the Grand Brut NV for under $50!

Definitely splurge on Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Whiskey($223.49). The best of the best, this is a premium blend of some of the most rare and expensive whiskeys in the world, aged for up to 60 years! Enjoy it straight, at room temperature to really get the full effect of the peat, cocoa, oak, and smoke flavors.

Since we've opened the store, I've learned so much about wines. As a result my taste in wines has changed and evolved. Now, I really enjoy a full bodied red that explodes with flavor. I love Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon '07 ($124.99)for special occasions and I grab a bottle of Orin Swift's The Prisoner Blend( $34.99) for family dinners. I love Boulevard and Goose Island Beers, but I'm still learning about the business, so I occationally grab a "Pick Six" of various beers that I want to try.

My splurge item  is Charles Krug 2007 Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon($23.99) and here’s why:
When I was working in NYC , managing construction projects, I got stuck in Midtown during a blizzard.  Having nowhere to go until the streets were cleared I ended up in a great wine bar.  So, I asked for a glass of the bars best red wine, bartender’s choice.  Charles Krug Cabernet was served to me.  The color in the glass was plum dark, rich and warm. It had some awesome legs.  The nose was full of chocolate, orange peels and roasted chestnuts combined with berries and peanut brittle flavors.  The plate had dark wild berries, cassis, licorice, massive tannins, but gorgeously rounded and balanced.  It’s elegance and complexity just blew me away. In the middle of a blizzard that shut down NYC completely, I not only savored  my wine, but based on my conversation with my bartender about the history of the vineyard, I made a vow to myself that I would make wine my passion and how I would make a living.  15 years later, here I am, helping manage a wonderful  family owned liquor retail store in KC, which slings some of the best wines I’ve ever tried in my life.

All of our Cognacs are great, but I would suggest Courvoisier Cognac VSOP($45.39). It is sweet and thick, with intense dark fruits, notes of vanilla and a slightly hot finish. Cognac should be savored--sip it slowly to appreciate its color, smell and taste!
If you need to buy a gift for the Cognac lover who has everything, then go for the Ultimate Splurge, Louis XIII de Remy Martin Grande Champagne Cognac($1,750). This fine, luxury Cognac is a blend of 1200 Cognacs, ranging in age from 40 to 100 years old, crafted from the combined labor of over 10,000 people. The bottle is a handmade, numbered Baccarat crystal decanter that includes a 24 carat gold collar on the neck.

LOVE GINGER! In Lawrence a few months ago, I enjoyed a delish cocktail made with ginger liqueur and sparkling wine. So, when I heard about Canton Ginger Liqueur ($31.99) and read the glowing reviews, I had to have some! Canton comes in a beautiful simple bottle that looks great on the shelf. Just like fresh ginger, a little bit goes a long way. At home, I paired Canton with various mixers, like Pellegrino Limonata, with Champagne and with Absolut Pear and every drink was tasty! Apparently everyone else loves ginger too, because I had a party recently and the bottle was quickly emptied of its contents!

I love football season and I'm a huge Chiefs fan! When I saw that Dick Vermeil was in the wine business, I was a little skeptical. Then I tasted his wine!  This is the personal wine project of the Super Bowl-winning, renowned NFL and former Chief's head coach, Dick Vermeil. I usually drink white wines, however the 2003 Jean-Louis Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon Frediani Vineyard ($79.99) was good from the first sip.  It possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet, chunky personality packed with oodles of blackberry, cassis, smoke, and tar characteristics. Now I know what to expect from a high quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Coach Vermeil has succeeded on the football field and in the vineyard!
